VLC Development Center

What is the Professional Development Center (PDC)?

The VLC Professional Development Center is one of three centers that support the NCCCS Virtual Learning Community (VLC). Each year, the PDC provides training and support to faculty across the NCCCS through learning objects in the NCLOR and training sessions at conferences and webinars.

NC-NET

NC-NET Academy -An Online Professional Development Program for Community and Technical College Faculty. The NC-NET Academy courses offer six-week facilitator-led online courses that weave together readings, activities, and discussions for participants to construct new understandings in the context of their own situations. Regional Center for Classroom Technologies and Online Instruction Sessionsdevelops resources in the areas of classroom technology and online teaching. Activities of the center will include workshops, webinars, and resources such as self-paced courses, tutorials, and videos to support faculty in their use of technology for instruction. Follow the link to view the upcoming sessions, registration information, and access to archived sessions.

The Good, the Bad, the Ugly of Distance Education
Thursday, January 19 & Friday, Jan 20, Moffatt Auditorium

The session is lead by a guest speaker. Mr. Kirk is an e-Learning Specialist/Instructional Designer/Consultant and former Director of Distance Learning at Randolph Community College. This interactive session will cover critical topics such as: best practices of teaching and learning in an online environment, accreditation issues and concerns, quality course design, instructor issues, effective technology usage, and advisement issues. After completing this workshop, participants will:
1- Have a greater understanding of quality course design principles
2- Have a greater understanding of effective use of technology in online learning environments
3- Have a greater understanding of best practices in online learning environments
4- Gain insight into effectively assessing student preparedness for online environments
5- Have a greater understanding of the Online Class Quality Pyramid

Turn It In - Anti Plagiarism

The college has adopted Turn It In for anti plagiarism. The session will show faculty how to use the tool both in and out of the Moodle environment. 1 hour workshop.

DE Advisor & Student Assessment Training

This session will discuss the advising process and the considerations when advising students who are interested in registering for online and hybrid courses. The focus will be the revised WCC Distance Education Students Assessment Check Sheet and advising processes for online/hybrid students. 1.5 hour workshop.

WCC has revised and/or developed Best Practices, Standards & Course Review process to accommodate SACS. The session will review best practices in distance education and and introduce the college's online/hybrid course standards & course evaluation processes. 2 hour workshop

Fundamentals of Accessibility
Thursday, February 2, 3:00-4:30, Webinar - Spruce 102

This session is lead by a NCCCS VLC representative. Are you developing or teaching an online course? If so, you’ll want to ensure that your content is accessible to all students. Creating accessible content is not only a good teaching practice, but it is also the law. This workshop defines and demonstrates current NC accessibility guidelines for online course content. Come and explore various accessibility testing tools and discover how compliance with accessibility mandates can benefit all students and make you a better instructor. This workshop will look at how to create accessible documents, presentations, and multimedia. In addition, we will look at examples of common online content accessibility problems and easy to implement solutions. Participants will be provided with resources to help make their online content accessible for all. This session is offered as a Webinar through the NCCCS VLC. SACS and Quality Matters

This session is lead by a NCCCS VLC representative. The VLC Quality Assessment Center conducted research concerning the SACs requirements for online courses. Comparisons were made using the VLC Course Development Template against SACs requirements, Quality Matters Standards and accessibility issues as related to developing online course content. This session is a face-to-face session offered through the NCCCS VLC. 1.5 hour workshop.

NCLOR Resources
Thursday, March 1, 3:00-5:00pm, Wal 101

The North Carolina Learning Object Repository (NCLOR) empowers faculty across North Carolina by providing them with a central location to manage, collect, contribute, and share digital learning resources for use in traditional or distance learning environments. The NCLOR is designed to increase the efficiency and productivity of K-20 teachers across the state by providing quality resources and by reducing duplication of effort associated with course development. NCLOR participants include the 58 colleges from the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), University of North Carolina (UNC ) System, North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (36 private institutions), the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI), and North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS). This is a face-to-face session offered through the NCCCS VLC. 1.5 hour workshop.

Using Rubrics to Promote Student Learning
Wednesday, March 14, 2:30-4:00pm, Webinar - Spruce 102

This webinar will explore using rubrics as a tool to promote students learning by encouraging critical thinking, developing meaningful feedback and reaching students with varying learning styles and abilities. Writing an effective rubric that measures what students should learn in an objective way for a subjective assignment can be challenging. This session provides North Carolina Community College instructors with a series of rubric templates to assist them in creating a grading rubric. Please note that rubric templates offered in this project consist of commonly-used criteria from numerous rubrics found in existing NCCCS courses and through Rubistar, an online rubric database and creation tool sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. 1.5 hour workshop.

Universal Course Design for Online/Hybrid Courses Workshop

The concept of Universal Design for Learning was introduced by the Center for Applies Special Technology (CAST). Just as Universal Design attempts to remove the barriers of everyday products and structures, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) attempts to remove the barriers to learning. The CAST website defines UDL as, "UDL provides a blueprint for creating instructional goals, methods, materials, and assessments that work for everyone--not a single, one-size-fits-all solution but rather flexible approaches that can be customized and adjusted for individual needs."  3 hour workshop.

WCC Online/Hybrid Standards, Guidelines & Checklist Workshop

To continue to provide high quality online/ hybrid courses, WCC has adopted Online/Hybrid Standards,Guidelines, and Check Sheets. The standards include major areas with essential standards for quality online courses based on the Quality Matters (QM) Rubric, SACS, SREB, NCCCS VLC and practices adopted from Cape Fear Community College. This session introduces the information and documents that will support instructors with online/hybrid course development, revision, and assessment.  2 hour workshop.
