Basic Skills - Adult Literacy Program
Where success happens! New skills, better jobs, higher salaries, entrance into college, and greater self-esteem are all possible when the choice is made to attend Basic Skills/Adult Literacy Classes. For general information, call 919-735-5151, ext. 700.
The Basic Skills/Adult Literacy program is offered on the campus of Wayne Community College as well as at sites throughout Goldsboro and Wayne County. This program is comprised of the following components.
Adult Basic Education (ABE)
Adult Basic Education (ABE) offers reading, writing, and math skills to adults seeking to further their education by taking GED or Adult High School classes. Adult High School (AHS)
Adult High School (AHS) is a 20- or 24- credit program in collaboration with Wayne County Public Schools that offers the opportunity to complete all requirements for a high school diploma. AHS is only offered on the WCC campus.

Compensatory Education (CED)
Compensatory Education (CED) is a community college program designed specifically for adults with mental disabilities or traumatic brain injury.

Distance Learning
Distance learning is available from The Literacy Center in many forms via the Internet, videos, and instructional software.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
English as a Second Language (ESL) is a program designed to assist speakers of other languages with speaking, reading and writing skills in the English language as well as with learning the American culture.

General Educational Development (GED)
General Educational Development Diploma (GED) is a diploma obtained by passing a series of five tests offered by the American Council on Education; Language Arts-Writing, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts-Reading, and Math.

The Literacy Center (TLC)
The Literacy Center is a lab with modern methods of teaching reading and math skills. The lab features computer-assisted instruction, one-on-one tutoring, group instruction, self-study at your own pace, and distance learning (see below). The lab provides GED preparation, literacy instruction, Adult High School elective courses, English as a Second Language instruction, and job-readiness assistance at no costs to those who desire these services.
Individualized education plans are developed for each student with appropriate curriculum based on the student’s strengths and weaknesses.

Off-Campus Sites
The Off-Campus Basic Skills Programs offer a full range of adult education opportunities at convenient locations throughout Goldsboro and locations in Wayne County such as Mount Olive, Seven Springs, and Pikeville.
All components of Basic Skills are offered at off-campus sites with the exception of Adult High School. Program offerings include ABE, parent and family literacy, preparation for the GED, ESL, U.S. Citizenship, and Compensatory Education. Adult students of all ages and abilities, from non-readers to adults in final preparation for taking the official GED Test, are invited to come to these classes.
Students are registered on site and an individual learning program is written for each adult learner. Classes are small and instruction and books are free. GED students who qualify to take the official GED test pay a small testing fee of $7.50 prior to testing. The official GED test is only given on the WCC campus.

Partnership Approach to Literacy (PAL)
