Non-Profit Management Courses Lead to Certificate

Wayne Community College Continuing Education Services will offer two courses in December for non-profit administrators and leaders.

“Strategic Planning” will be held on 4 p.m.-8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 8 in Room 104 of the Walnut Building on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro. “Promotions and Public Relations” will be taught 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Dec. 13 in Room 161 of the Wayne Learning Center.

Cost for each course is $70.

These courses are two in the series of courses designed to teach how to grow and manage successful non-profit organizations. Completion of 48 hours of courses in the college’s Non-Profit Management Certificate Program is required to earn a certificate.

The Wayne Business and Industry Center will offer the free seminar “Fifteen Common Mistakes that Will Undermine Any Business” 6-9 p.m., Wednesday, November 19 at the Wayne County Public Library on Ash Street in Goldsboro.

Presenter Bob Moore created this seminar from his experiences of owning his own businesses and working for medium and large domestic and international corporations. During this seminar, he will share the 15 most common mistakes made by entrepreneurs and corporations that ultimately undermine the business.

Wayne Community College invites the public to a ceremony to honor those who have served in the U.S. military. The event is set for 1 p.m. on Nov. 10 at the Veterans Monument on its campus.

State Sen. Don Davis will provide the keynote address. WCC President Dr. Kay H. Albertson, and college employees, current students, and alumni will also participate. A reception will follow the program.

Military representatives and organizations that assist veterans, active duty military, and their dependents will have displays and provide information in the college’s front parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Mobile Vet Center will also be there to provide counseling and guidance on its services.

Road construction is no longer an issue on Wayne Memorial Drive and accessing the college has returned to normal. However, guests are encouraged to use the entrance to the campus at the traffic light as entry at the other Wayne Memorial Drive entrance will be restricted to protect pedestrians going to the monument.

Wayne Community College Continuing Education is offering a Microsoft Office certification examination preparation course.

The course will prepare students for the Microsoft Office Specialist Certification exam, which will be provided for free. It will give students a fundamental understanding of the Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access 2013 environments, and the ability complete tasks in them and demonstrate the correct application of the principal features of each.

Classes will be held 6-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13-Dec. 18. Location is Room 112 of the Spruce Building on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro.

Students may register and pay the $180 class fee at the Continuing Education Division’s Customer Service Desk in the Walnut Building on the college’s main campus.

Wayne Community College Continuing Education has grant money available to assist students who have been adversely impacted by changes in the tobacco industry.

The college’s Project Skill-UP program provides career assessments, Career Readiness Certification preparation, courses to upgrade or learn new job skills, and financial assistance including tuition and fee waivers for students who are unemployed and underemployed and affected by the decline of the tobacco industry.

Project Skill-UP was piloted in 2006 with a N.C. Tobacco Trust Fund (NCTTF) grant to the N.C. Community College System. The NCTTF has continued to fund the training initiative and Wayne Community College has received a portion of those funds each year, including $15,000 for the past funding cycle.

The goal of Project Skill-UP is to help individuals in North Carolina affected by the changes in the tobacco industry “update” their current skills and provide them with additional marketable skills reflective of fast-growing occupations and/or new industries within their local communities. The objectives of the project are to 1) develop and implement outreach and recruitment activities to individuals, communities, businesses, and/or agencies that have been adversely impacted by the changes in the tobacco industry; 2) provide skills assessment and short-term occupational skills training to affected workers; and 3) when applicable, provide financial assistance to students to assist in meeting their educational goals.

The NCTTF was established to assist tobacco farmers, tobacco quota holders, persons engaged in tobacco-related businesses, individuals displaced from tobacco-related employment, and tobacco product component businesses in North Carolina by funding programs that support, foster, encourage, and facilitate a strong agricultural economy in this state or otherwise address needs in the tobacco-related segment of the state’s economy.
