Wayne Community College students working toward certain credentials for high-demand careers may be eligible for funds to cover their fees and expenses.
Students pursuing particular workforce training programs that lead to a State- or industry-recognized credential can apply for Short-term Workforce Development Grants of up to $750 per course.
The grants, which are based on student needs, may be used for tuition/registration fees, course fees, books, supplies, credentialing tests, transportation, child care, and other costs of attendance.
To be eligible, courses must be short-term training within workforce pathways that lead to a state or industry-recognized credential. The qualifying courses were identified by the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) in collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.
A list of the approved credentials can be found here. Information technology, transportation, public safety and corrections, and health sciences are some of the fields represented on that list.
Currently enrolled and summer semester Workforce Continuing Education students may apply if they are taking a course that results in a credential in the approved areas. They also must be a North Carolina resident as determined by the NC Residency Determination Service.
According to NCCCS documents, “North Carolina must have a well-trained workforce in critical high-demand fields to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to grow our economy. … These funds intend to remove access barriers to high-quality, in-demand, sustaining wage careers for North Carolinians.”
More details and the application are available at on the WCC Workforce Continuing Education webpage.
