Wayne Community College’s tutoring program and its personnel have collected several national accolades.
The National Tutoring Association (NTA) recognized WCC’s Academic Skills Center (ASC) with its 2022 Tutoring Program Excellence Award in the two-year school category in a ceremony during the association’s virtual conference.
It was the first time in association history that the award has been presented to the same recipient in two consecutive years.
This award is granted to programs providing superior service to students. Dr. Lucy Lapekas, NTA executive director, noted during the presentation that she hopes “that she is able to present this award to WCC’s ASC for the next decade, as they go above and beyond to help students not only meet their academic goals, but also help students learn to love learning.”
“I would have been doing a disservice to this dynamic team had I not nominated them again. They are a phenomenal team and it is an absolute pleasure to work alongside them each day,” said Dr. Brandy Daingerfield, the center’s director. “It is easy to lead this team because this group of educators is a family that genuinely cares for their students.”
Professional Tutor and Academic Skills Center Coordinator Lucy Stutts was named Tutor of the Year for her outstanding work with students in the 2021-2022 academic year.
Cheryle Melton was awarded the 2022 Tutor Profile in Courage Award which is given to a tutor who has overcome significant hardships in the past year while will providing superior service to help students. Melton serves as the part-time administrative assistant for the center and a part-time professional tutor.
Daingerfield was honored with two awards: the first ever NTA Executive Director’s Award and Research Proposal of the Year.
The Executive Director Award was presented for outstanding support of the association.
Daingerfield’s research will investigate service learning as a tutor training strategy. She is currently working on development of this training curriculum for implementation at WCC. She hopes it will branch into new training programs and certifications for students and tutors.
