Wayne Community College will celebrate the talent of its art students with an exhibition of their works and the unveiling of a special project.
The show will run April 29-May 6. More than 150 works by Drawing, Painting, and Design students plus alumni and current students not enrolled in art classes will be on display in the Atrium of the Wayne Learning Center on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro.
The pinnacle of the week will be the Spring Fine Arts Festival and the unveiling of the North Carolina Troopers Association’s Caisson Unit trailer that is wrapped in WCC student artwork. That is set for 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 2.
Included in the show will be the pieces that were submitted for the 2019 Juried Art Show held earlier this month. Some of those works will be available for purchase. The winning pieces will be announced and prizes presented, including the Peoples’ Choice Award that will be based on votes cast during the festival.
“We invite all to attend. It will be a wonderful way of supporting the talent that is within our college,” said WCC Art Instructor Angie Waller.
She also encouraged art lovers to take advantage of works that are for sale. “This is an excellent way to purchase an original and affordable piece of art that directly helps students at Wayne Community College,” she said.
Prints and greeting cards made from select pieces of past and current student art will also be on sale. Print prices start at $25. Buyers can choose paper or canvas prints.
All proceeds of the sale of original pieces, prints, and cards will go to the Foundation of Wayne Community College’s Fine Arts Fund to provide scholarships and enrichment activities.
In addition to the art show, there will be live musical entertainment by WCC students.
The caisson unit provides equine funeral processions for fallen law enforcement, firefighters, governors, and other state dignitaries of North Carolina and bordering states. It consists of black horses that pull a caisson wagon and specially trained members of the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
The unit and the art students connected through the “Art of Giving,” a WCC art program service project that allows students in art classes to select organizations to assist with volunteer labor or donations. The students chose to give the caisson unit a $100 gift in the fall 2018 semester and were asked if they would be interested in creating custom art of the horses and scenes from funerals that could be used on a vinyl wrap of the unit’s horse trailer. In less than a semester, the works were completed, digitized, and the trailer turned into a tribute to the unit’s work.
The trailer will be unveiled at 6 p.m. on May 2 and remain on display during the Festival, as will the original works of art. The artists have given the pieces to the caisson unit and they will be sold at a later fundraising event.
The Festival is free and open to the public.
