Students in Wayne Community College’s Aviation Systems Technology program have earned certificates that signify a milestone in their academic journey.
During a special presentation, the students were awarded General Certificates of Completion, which will allow them to take the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s general mechanic written exam.
WCC’s Aviation Systems Technology students are preparing to become aircraft mechanics, and they will now work toward completing the requirements to earn aircraft mechanic certificates with airframe and/or powerplant ratings.
The 15 students, listed by city of residence, are

In addition to the general certificate, Capko also received Airframe and Powerplant Certificates of Completion during the presentation, allowing her to take the FAA’s written exams for those ratings as well.
“It feels pretty good,” Capko said about finally earning all three certificates. “It’s been a long time waiting and a lot of late nights.”
WCC’s Aviation Systems Technology program was a perfect fit for Capko, who wanted to enroll in a local program and eventually work as an aircraft mechanic. “Before this, I was a car mechanic. I wanted to do something bigger,” she said about working on airplanes.
Jumangit also said that it feels great to earn the general certificate. “It’s been a lot of hard work for me,” he said. “I’ve been driving an hour and 30 minutes just to get to class every day.”
The drive is worth it for Jumangit, who wanted to attend WCC’s program because of the smaller class sizes. “I don’t have a mechanical background, so I’m just starting out fresh with everything,” he said.
WCC’s Aviation Systems Technology program offers an Aviation Systems Technology Degree, Aviation Systems Technology Airframe Diploma, and Aviation Systems Technology Powerplant Diploma.
For students interested in getting a four-year degree, WCC’s associate in applied science degree in Aviation Systems Technology qualifies for East Carolina University’s Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology Transfer Program.
