Wayne Community College will give families a “taste” of science on April 21.
The college’s “Celebration of Food Science” will allow the whole family to participate in short experiments and view displays about food science in a free carnival-style event.
It will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, April 21 in the Wayne Learning Center Atrium and the grounds around the building.
WCC Biology Instructor Sondi Hoffman, the event’s organizer, said that science and math will be incorporated throughout the festival in fun ways. Attendees will learn how food science is changing at the agricultural level, how food affects body and teeth, and the connections between food texture and taste.
In addition to the college’s Science and Math departments, its Agriculture and Natural Resources and Dental departments are involved in the event.
Activities inside the building will allow participants to explore food from a chemistry perspective by making ice cream, gummy worms, and edible water bottles. Outside they can learn about physics with activities such as Mentos® geysers.
The college’s fair is an official event of the 2018 North Carolina Science Festival with its theme of “The Science of Food and Drink.” It is one of 400 events showcasing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and activities being held across the state during the month of April.
