College To Hold Camps for Middle and High School Students

Wayne Community College’s Workforce Continuing Education Division will offer 18 youth day camps this summer.

Photoshop Magic Camp for rising sixth-eighth graders: 1-4 p.m., June 11-14, and for rising ninth-12th graders: 9 a.m.-noon, June 11-14 – Campers will learn how to make mundane photographs pop, remove unwanted elements from photos easily and completely, remove red eye, composite multiple photos together, create stunning black and white photos, and much more. Cost: $80.

Allied Health Career Exploration Camp for rising sixth-eighth graders: 9 a.m.-noon, June 11-14; and for rising ninth-12th graders: 1-4 p.m., June 11-14 – These camps will provide a general overview of the allied health career field. Campers will receive a first aid and CPR certificate upon completion of the camp. Cost: $60.

Automotive Camp: 9 a.m.-noon, June 18-21 – The focus of this camp for rising ninth-12th graders is basic painting and refinishing and basic automotive engine operation. Campers will take make external vehicle repairs and take part in hands-on activities related to internal combustion engines. Cost: $80.

Aviation Camp: 9 a.m.-noon, June 25-28 – Rising sixth-eighth graders will explore aviation and discover the unlimited opportunities a career in aviation presents. The campers will have hands-on experiences and construct and launch their own rockets. Cost: $80.

Information Technology Academy for rising sixth-eighth graders: 9 a.m.-noon, June 18-21; and for rising ninth-12th graders, 1-4 p.m., June 18-21. This academy introduces the various aspects of computer hardware. Campers will disassemble and reassemble computers, build a micro PC using the Raspberry Pi, and learn how to install programs. Cost: $80.

Video Game Academy for rising sixth-eighth graders: 1-4 p.m., June 25-28; and 9 a.m.-noon, June 25-28. Campers will engage in 3D modeling, bug testing video games, creating video games, and programming. They will gain hands-on experience designing and producing game artifacts to share with family and friends. They will compete in a gaming tournament, the winner of which will receive a medal. Cost: $80.

Fashion Camp for rising sixth-eighth graders: 1-3 p.m., June 11-14 and June 18-21; and for rising ninth-12th graders: 1-3 p.m., July 9-12 and July16-19 – This camp will introduce basic sewing techniques, sewing machine operations, fashion design principles, and much more while challenging campers to create a final project to display. Cost: $60 includes all sewing and class materials.

Animal Science Career Exploration Camp:
Camp II for those who attended this camp last year: 1-4 p.m., July 16-19;
Camp I for those new to this camp: 1-4 p.m., July 23-26 –
Campers will learn about careers in animal science and veterinary medicine through hands-on labs, workshops, and team building. Activities will include lessons in animal anatomy, food safety, chicken embryology, and animal care. It is designed for rising sixth-eighth graders. Cost: $60 includes a camp T-shirt.

Emergency Responders Camp: 9 a.m.-noon, July 9-12 – This camp explores the dynamics of various public safety career choices. During this interactive camp, campers will learn the valuable lessons of what firefighters, EMTs, Paramedics, and Police Officers engage in while on duty. It will conclude with an overview of how all the areas work together during a critical incident. Cost: $80.

Summer Enrichment: The Pre-College Experiment consists of three camps designed to reinforce and enhance seventh- and eighth-graders’ regular academic coursework. College instructors will facilitate content in math, reading, and science, and provide an effective summer learning experience. Cost of each camp: $60.
Science: 9 a.m.-noon, July 16-July 19;
Math: 9 a.m.-noon, July 23-26;
Reading: 9 a.m.-noon, July 30-Aug. 2.

All camps will be held on the college’s campus in Goldsboro except the Aviation Camp which will be conducted at the Wayne Executive Jetport in Pikeville.

Each participant will receive a camp T-shirt.
