Wayne Community College has received two awards from the City of Goldsboro’s Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities.
WCC Technology Support Technician Felipe Chavez Jr., was honored with the 2020 Employee of the Year Award. The award recognizes an employee who has overcome handicaps to achieve success in the workplace.
Chavez, who has hearing loss, is a 2013 graduate of WCC’s Networking Technology program. He has held positions in information technology at the college since he completed his degree.
“Felipe is very deserving of this honor and we are happy to have him as a member of the WCC family,” said Tara Humphries, the college’s public information officer, who had nominated him for the award.
The College was presented the 2020 Employer of the Year Award and was lauded for outstanding achievement in employment and providing job opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
“WCC could not be the community’s college if we didn’t behave this way. Congratulations for this award goes to every employee for contributing to our inclusive culture,” Humphries responded.
The awards were presented during the committee’s 2020 Annual Awards Ceremony which was held on Oct. 15 as a drive-in event for recipients that was live streamed on social media. The event is traditionally held in October in recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
