Wayne Community College will bring a Tar Heel spin to science on April 13.
The college’s “Homegrown Science in NC” event will allow the whole family to participate in short experiments and view displays that celebrate science and things made and grown in North Carolina.
The free carnival-style event will be held 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, April 13 in the Wayne Learning Center Atrium.
WCC Biology Instructor Sondi Hoffman, the event’s organizer, said that science will be incorporated throughout the festival in fun ways. Attendees will visit stations that provide a variety of hands-on experiments and displays.
Activities include meeting and interacting with local beekeepers, participating in the making of Mentos geysers, and touching real NC fossils. Participants can also learn about diverse organisms that are all “made in NC,” extract DNA from NC grown strawberries, and grow their own NC plant. Since NC is “first in flight,” visitors can try their hand at making and flying paper airplanes and watch a falconry demonstration.
The college’s fair is an official event of the 2019 North Carolina Science Festival with its theme of “Made in North Carolina.” It is one of hundreds of events showcasing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities being held across the state during the month of April. Founded in 2010, the North Carolina Science Festival is the first statewide science festival in the United States. Through a series of community-based events each April (hosted by schools, colleges, libraries, museums, parks, businesses and other local organizations), the Festival celebrates the economic, educational, and cultural impact of science in North Carolina.
The Festival is presented by the Biogen Foundation and produced by Morehead Planetarium and Science Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. For more information, visit www.ncsciencefestival.org.
