Wayne Community College will offer several short-term training options this fall that prepare students for careers in health care.
Medical Billing and Coding is an online introductory course that leads to a certificate from the college and the opportunity to seek certification as a Certified Professional Coder by the American Academy of Professional Coders. It is recommended for students who have no prior knowledge or experience in coding and billing. Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, fundamentals of medical coding, billing, insurance, ICD 10 and CPT codes are covered. It runs Aug. 19-Dec. 6.
An evening Phlebotomy Technician course will be offered. This course teaches students how to draw blood specimens and prepares them to take the National Phlebotomy Certification Examination. It will be taught 5:30-9:30 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Aug. 26-Dec. 16.
An EKG Monitor Technician course will cover anatomy and physiology of the heart, principles of EKG readings, and how to recognize the abnormal rhythms of the heart. The student will become proficient in reading and interpreting EKGs. Classes will be held 6-9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 27-Dec. 19.
An Activity Director course that provides the basic training necessary to work as an activity director in a healthcare setting will be offered. This course meets the North Carolina Division of Facility Services training requirement for activity directors at skilled nursing facilities. It includes 70 hours of classroom instruction and documentation and 20 hours of clinical experience in an approved skilled nursing facility. It will be held 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 4-Nov. 13.
The Medication Aide course is required for a nurse aide I to become a medication aide in a skilled facility. Upon completion of the course, students take a competency exam and demonstrate skills necessary to qualify for listing on the North Carolina Medication Aide Registry. The course runs for six Saturdays starting Sept. 7.
The registration fee for each of these courses is $180 except the Medication Aide class, which costs $70.
Students can register and pay at the Workforce Continuing Education Customer Service Desk located at the east entrance of the Walnut Building on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro.
