Several Wayne Community College courses that prepare students for careers in health care will begin in January.
The Medical Billing and Coding Certificate Program is composed of two semester-long online courses. It is an introductory program that leads to a certificate from the college and the opportunity to seek certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders.
Part I introduces medical terminology and anatomy and physiology. It also teaches the fundamentals of medical coding, billing, and insurance. Part II covers health insurance and selecting appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes, as well as legal, moral, and ethical issues.
Both courses are offered each semester. This spring they will run Jan. 8 through April 30.
An Activity Director course that provides the qualifications necessary to work in a healthcare-related setting will be taught. It is the basic training required by the N.C. Division of Facility Services, including 70 hours of classroom instruction and 20 hours of clinical experience in an approved skilled nursing facility. The course will be taught 5:30-8:30 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan. 28-April 8.
Health Unit Coordinator is an online course that prepares students for an entry-level position as a hospital unit secretary. Medical terminology will be stressed and communication, records, reports, physician orders, labs, radiology orders and appointments, medical charts, and data entry, as well as basic medical law and ethics, will be presented. It will be held Jan. 8-April 30.
Also held will be Nurse Aide Refreshers that provide reviews for nurse aides whose registry listings have expired. The Nurse Aide 1 refresher course is scheduled for 5:30-8:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 24-March 21. For information on the Nurse Aide II refresher, contact the college.
