Wayne Community College will hold an information session on the Spanish Medical Interpreter Program it will offer this fall.
The free information session is scheduled for 1 p.m. on July 8 in Room 101 of the Walnut Building on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro.
The 12-week program will train students fluent in English and Spanish to become Spanish Medical Interpreters. It will be taught Sept. 9-Dec. 14.
Medical Interpreters are used in hospitals, outpatient centers, and physician practices to assist English-speaking health professionals with communicating information to patients with limited English proficiency. Interpreters enable healthcare professionals and patients to communicate important information to insure patients’ safety and comfort.
The course is conducted in three consecutive parts. Each must be passed to advance to the next.
The first four weeks is an online Medical Terminology course. The second four weeks are spent in a face-to-face Medical Interpreting Skills class that will meet 5:30-9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The final component is clinical practice in which students will work at a clinical site as an interpreter under the supervision of the instructor for 40 hours over four weeks.
The schedule will allow individuals who are currently working or enrolled in other school work to also attend this training.
Successful completion will lead to a certificate issued by the WCC Workforce Continuing Education Division and the student will be eligible to take an exam from an accrediting agency.
The program costs $180 for registration plus fees and the price of books.
Attendance at an information session is mandatory for those who wish to register for the program but a representative may attend on an individual’s behalf. Registration for the fall session of the program will be held at the college on Aug. 6.
