Wayne Community College Applied Animal Science Instructor Jennifer Johnson has been recognized as the 2024 Agriculture Advocate of the Year by the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce.
The award was presented during the Chamber’s annual agriculture breakfast held at the Maxwell Center. Johnson was named as the recipient of the award due to her contributions to the growth and prosperity of Wayne County agriculture.
Johnson has been the animal science instructor at WCC for 18 years. She has been involved in the agricultural community for many years, participating in the National FFA Organization in high school and in an agriculture advocacy group at North Carolina State University (NCSU), where she attended and majored in animal science.
Additionally, Johnson is a member and former chair of the Chamber’s agriculture affairs committee. She is second vice president of the Wayne County Livestock Development Association, a member of the Wayne County Cooperative Extension Advisory Board, and a graduate of the Karl Best Agricultural Leadership Program where she now serves on the advisory committee.
Johnson is a graduate of NCSU’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Agricultural Leadership program and of Leadership Wayne where she now serves as a regent. She has also served on the county’s Junior Leadership committee.
“We are blessed to have Jennifer as a part of Wayne Community College and the Agriculture and Natural Resources family,” said WCC Agriculture and Natural Resources Department Chair Gabe Mitchell. “Every class she teaches and every interaction she has demonstrates how she is a champion for agriculture. We are so proud of her accomplishments, and she is well deserving of the Agriculture Advocate of the Year Award.”
