Wayne Community College student Aziah Morales has been recognized for outstanding leadership and service.
Morales is one of 23 students selected by their campuses for the 2017 Community Impact Award given by the North Carolina Campus Compact, a statewide network of colleges and universities with a shared commitment to civic engagement.
The network honors one student leader at each member school and has recognized more than 250 college students since the award was first presented in 2006. Because Wayne Community College joined the Compact network for the first time in 2017-2018, Morales is the first student from the college to receive the award.
Since she enrolled at Wayne Community College in 2015, Morales has worked with numerous community agencies and campus groups. First as the WCC Student Government Association special populations chair and now as its president, Morales has made community service a priority, facilitating hurricane relief efforts, donation drives for local non-profits, and events, including a campus lunch-and-learn for Rare Disease Day.
A criminal justice major, she is also president of the college’s Criminal Justice Club.
Morales and other award recipients were honored at the Compact’s annual CSNAP (Citizenship, Service, Networking and Partnerships) Student Conference, held this year on November 18 at Winston-Salem State University. The event convened more than 230 students and staff from 28 campuses in the network. The conference included student-led workshops on diverse community engagement topics and featured remarks by local “change agents” representing different public service pathways.
