A Wayne Community College student group is holding a walk to raise awareness of and provide needed items for homeless individuals.
The event, “A Walk in Someone Else’s Shoes,” is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 16 at Stoney Creek Park, 2200 E. Ash St., Goldsboro. The cost to participate in the one-mile walk is a donation of new or gently used socks, shoes, clothes, or money.
According to the group, 9,280 people in North Carolina are experiencing homelessness, and many unhoused persons live in Wayne County.
“Their number one need is socks,” said group spokesperson Mills Hancock. “We created this race to bring awareness to this fact and bring these people what they most need.”
The team is comprised of students in the college’s Honors Leadership Development class. One requirement of the course is to carry out projects that will improve their community.
Register for the walk online or at the event.
