Wayne Community College has released a slimmed-down schedule of summer continuing education courses.
WCC’s Workforce Continuing Education Services division will offer a limited number of classes and all will be taught online to insure safe and healthy conditions for students and college employees.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused all of us to have to think about how we do things in new and different ways. This is the same for how we provide training to the community,” said Associate Vice President Renita Allen Dawson.
“In order to keep our students, faculty and staff safe, we had to back up and develop more online training options,” Dawson said. “While we miss our students, we hope these course selections will allow community members to expand their skills or take a class for enjoyment during this period of social distancing.”
Among the close to three dozen courses are two special sets of offerings that are free or can count toward a degree.
Many of the summer courses begin mid-May.
Two Allied Health classes will be taught this summer: Medical Billing and Coding and Health Unit Coordinator. Both begin May 18.
Other allied health courses – Nurse Aide I, Nurse Aide II, Phlebotomy, and Spanish Medical Interpreter – are on hiatus until fall. Potential students for these courses should email Program Coordinator Elizabeth Curry by June 15 to get information on preadmission requirements and registration.
Several Human Resource Development (HRD) courses that provide employability skills and career development will be offered, including “More Money, Fewer Worries,” “Thrive: Workplace Skills for the Next Level,” “Interviews and Resumes: Keys to Perfection” and “Working Smart.”
Fees are waived for HRD courses for qualifying individuals who are unemployed, underemployed, or have received notice of layoff or pending layoff.
Six Emergency Medical Services classes are scheduled. For information on other public safety courses, contact Beverly Deans at 919-739-6798.
Also in the lineup are Commercial Driver’s License Permit Study and Defensive Driving courses.
Two “Parallel Training Courses” will give students the opportunity to experience curriculum (college credit) courses before entering a degree program. The courses qualify for “Credit for Prior Learning” that counts toward a degree or certificate. The two Parallel Training Courses offered this summer are Agricultural Chemicals and Introduction to Electricity.
Four “Leisure and Recreation” courses are being provided free of charge to give students tastes of topics offered by the Workforce Continuing Education division. The courses will meet in one-hour online sessions, one evening a week for four weeks in June. They are Floral Design, “WERK” Cardio Fitness, American Sign Language, and Communicating Effectively in Challenging Situations.
All Transitional Programs for College and Career – Adult High School, High School Equivalency, and English Language Acquisition (ELA) – also will be provided online.
The high school programs begin May 18. Contact Erica Babb at 919-739-6908 for more information on the admission process for these programs.
Day and evening ELA classes are available. They start in late May. For more information, contact Maria Abalo-Zarate (919-739-6924) or Brandie Pavon (919-739-6909).
New online registration procedures for all but the TPCC programs have been implemented. Details on the process and about all of the summer classes can be found in the Workforce Continuing Education Summer 2020 Course Schedule.
