WCC Starting Spanish Medical Interpreter Program

February 06, 2019

Wayne Community College will start a Spanish Medical Interpreters program in May.

The 12-week program will train students fluent in English and Spanish to become Spanish Medical Interpreters.

Medical Interpreters are used in hospitals, outpatient centers, and physician practices to assist English-speaking health professionals with communicating information to patients with limited English proficiency.

The course will include a mix of online, classroom, and clinical work that will cover Spanish/English medical terminology and interpreter skills, and provide practice in a lab and a clinic site.

The schedule will allow individuals who are currently working or enrolled in other school work to also attend this training. The first four weeks will be completely online, the second four weeks will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and the final component is 40 hours of working as a supervised interpreter at a clinical site scheduled over four weeks.

Successful completion will lead to a certificate issued by the WCC Workforce Continuing Education division and the student will be eligible to take an exam from an accrediting agency.

The program costs $180 for registration plus the price of books and other fees.

More details will be provided in free information sessions scheduled for 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5 and 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12. Anyone interested in the program need attend just one of the sessions. They will be held in Room 101 of the Walnut Building on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro.

Attendance at an information session is mandatory for those who wish to register for the program but a representative may attend on an individual’s behalf.

Registration will be held at 7:30 a.m. on April 2. Classes will run May 15-Aug. 14.
