Two Wayne Community College students have been awarded scholarships from the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU).
Mikayla Ward and Jaylen Anderson are recipients of funds from the SECU Foundation People Helping People Two-Year Scholarship Program for NC Community Colleges.
The scholarship can be used to pay for full-time tuition, books, fees, course supplies, and transportation while the students are enrolled at WCC.
Ward is a freshman working toward an associate in arts degree. After WCC, she plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and wants to work for Apple, Inc. technology company.
Anderson is a freshman majoring in Business Administration. His goal is to become a professional stockbroker or artist. “Most of all I want to give back to the community,” he said.
Each year, the SECU Foundation scholarship program provides “People Helping People” Scholarships valued at up to $5,000 to two college-credit students at each of the 58 community colleges in the state.
Each college is asked to consider “the individual most deserving of an opportunity to attend college.” The recipients best exemplify the “people helping people” membership philosophy of the credit union and who have demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement.
The scholarship program represents an annual commitment of over $5 million, with a collective total of over $76 million since the initial scholarship funding began in 2005.
