Wayne Community College will host training for volunteer storm spotters next week.
The National Weather Service (NWS) will provide its SKYWARN® training 12:10-2:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18 in Moffatt Auditorium at the college. The training is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required.
SKYWARN® volunteers support their local community by providing the NWS with timely and accurate severe weather reports. These reports, when integrated with modern NWS technology, are used to inform the public of the proper actions to take as severe weather threatens.
The key focus of the SKYWARN® program is to save lives and property through the use of the observations and reports of trained volunteers. Storm spotters are not “storm chasers.”
The training covers
basics of thunderstorm development,
fundamentals of storm structure,
identifying potential severe weather features,
information to report and how to report it, and
basic severe weather safety.
This training session is provided by the college as a National Preparedness Month event.
